The official opening of Silsden Town Hall proved an excellent showcase for its £300,000-plus improvements, says a local politician.

Andrew Mallinson, who represents Silsden on Bradford Council, described Saturday’s event as “fantastic”.

He said there was a very good turnout from people for activities including stage performances, a Valentine’s fair and talks about the Tour de France.

Coun Mallinson said: “The council money was extremely well spent. There was not one single criticism on Saturday, there was just a ‘wow factor’. I think the look of the finished building is what astounded people, there’s an overall quality to the place.”

The town hall was closed for several months last autumn while Bradford Council, which owns the town hall, carried out extensive refurbishments.

Contractors improved access for disabled people, including a lift to the upper floor, new disabled toilets, and a ramp on the pavement outside. The upstairs function room was refurbished, with new sound and light equipment available to groups hiring the building.

Silsden Library moved from nearby Wesley Place into a ground floor room in the town hall.

Coun Mallinson said the new technical equipment was showcased on Saturday through the performances of local groups, including the All Stars Majorettes.

Coun Mallinson said: “The room lends itself very well to the holding of performance events. It will be a good venue.”

He said the Valentine’s fair featured stalls by Silsden Gala Committee – which organised the opening event – Silsden History Society and local traders.

Silsden minister the Rev David Griffiths gave the talks about the Tour.
