An appeal against refusal of plans to build a bungalow on a former council yard and depot in Barnoldswick has been rejected by the Planning Inspectorate.

Inspector Nigel McGurk dismissed the appeal by Langdale 101 Ltd to build the home on land off Skipton Road, adjacent to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and to the rear of properties on Roundell Road.

Mr McGurk said: “The proposed development would largely fill the width of the appeal site and would appear ‘squeezed’ onto its plot, affording it a cramped appearance. Consequently, the proposal would appear incongruous in its surroundings.

“It would be out of keeping with the spacious layout of adjacent properties along Roundell Road and would contrast with the open and spacious attributes of the surrounding area.”

He also said the Canal and Rivers Trust was concerned that the excavation and building works could impact on the canal.
