Health and safety issues have meant a last minute change of venue is highly likely for a concert due to take place at Skipton Town Hall next week.

More than 230 people have already booked tickets to hear renowned pianist Jayson Gillham perform at the Skipton Music concert on Tuesday.

But an issue with a fire escape has meant a 100 person limit being put on the event, which means the concert will probably be moved to Christ Church at the other end of town.

Owners, Craven District Council told organisers on Tuesday to make alternative plans but they are holding out until tomorrow for a final decision.

“Everyone from the council is trying very hard to sort it out, but it seems we’ve got to wait until tomorrow before we know for sure,” said concerts secretary Bunty Leder.

“I’m 99.9 per cent sure it will mean the concert going to Christ Church,” she said.

A council spokesman said: “Due to damage to the lean-to on the Jerry Croft side of the building, it has had to be cordoned off for safety reasons. Therefore the lean-to cannot be used as a fire escape.

“The council has taken fire safety advice and this has temporarily restricted capacity for events in the main hall to 100. Unfortunately this affects the Skipton Music Concert to be held in the Town Hall on Tuesday. The council hopes to rectify the situation as quickly as possible and apologises for any inconvenience caused in the meantime.

“The council’s director of services called Skipton Music Concert organiser Bunty Leder on Tuesday to let her know that, sadly, the event cannot go ahead as planned. All event organisers affected will be contacted by the council.”

If necessary, members of the concert committee will be outside the town hall on Tuesday to redirect people to Christ Church, on Keighley Road, where the concert will start 15 minutes later than planned at 7.45pm.

An announcement will also be made on the society’s website at skiptonmusic.org.uk.
