Settle singer John Newman has missed out in the coveted Brit Awards.

The chart-topper was beaten for the title of best British Male Solo Artist by music veteran by David Bowie.

And he was pipped at the post for the best British Single by the band Rudimental, with whom he had a number one hit Feel the Love, in 2012.

The winners were announced at an awards ceremony at London's O2 Arena last night.
John has spent the past 12 months promoting his solo career, with his debut album, Tribute, topping the charts.

Twenty-three-year-old John started playing and writing music when he was 14, but left Settle College intending to be a mechanic.

Halfway through his first term he realised he was spending more time asleep in the back recovering from gigs than he was learning about carburettors so decided to change career.

He secured a place at the Leeds College of Music and, at the age of 20, moved to London where he signed with Island Records.
