People power forces u-turn on Lancashire bus subsidies
9:00am Saturday 22nd February 2014 in News
Public pressure has forced a u-turn over scrapping subsidies for rural Lancashire buses, including the final evening service in Barnoldswick.
Lancashire County Council had considered a proposal to save £3.8 million by withdrawing subsidies for rural buses.
But the move was opposed by regular bus user and Barnoldswick resident Lyle Davy, 17, who ran a SaveOurBarlickBuses campaign.
He said: “Obviously this is great news for the whole town. I argued hard that we needed these services for employment, and for socialising.
“This is a victory for the whole town and shows that people power works.”
A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “The cabinet decided not accept a proposal to scrap these services, but each service will be reviewed on a case by case basis.”
