A meeting for farmers to discuss the implications of the summer’s Tour de France Grand Depart in Craven is due to be held on Monday.

The joint Craven District Council and National Farmers Union information meeting will be a chance for farmers to ask questions about how the race will affect their businesses.

The race will come through Craven on July 5 and July 6 and is expected to attract more than a million visitors. It is likely to impact on farmers’ ability to transport milk to dairies and to carry out other aspects of their business.

More than a million people are expected to pour into Craven during the weekend of the Grand Depart. On the first day it will travel from Leeds to Harrogate, taking in Draughton, Skipton, Rylstone, Cracoe, Kilnsey and onto Buckden, and on the second day it will take in Bolton Bridge before heading towards Addingham and Silsden.

Roads will be closed to all but emergency vehicles from early in the morning for a minimum of eight hours.

The meeting will also give farmers an opportunity to ask how they can make the most of the event, including the renting out of land for camping and parking.

Coun Simon Myers, lead member for the Tour de France, said he hoped as many farmers as possible would attend the meeting.

“We are inviting farmers to share any questions or concerns they may have. By working together, we will find solutions and opportunities to help ensure that farming and cycling can take place side by side.”

Tim Palmer from the NFU added: “We welcome this initiative by the council and are looking forward to working together constructively to ensure farming businesses can run smoothly during the Tour de France weekend.”

The meeting will take place at Threshfield Village Hall from 7.30pm and will include speakers from the council, the NFU, iNorth Yorkshire County Council, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and the police.
