A Barnoldswick great-grandmother, who has just celebrated her 100th birthday, has credited a plain diet and lack of stress as keys to long life.

Winifred Fairchild was born in Barnoldswick on February 16, 1914.

The daughter of a butcher and cotton manufacturer, Mrs Fairchild was a former pupil of Rainhall Road Infants School and Colne Grammar School.

She did teacher training and taught at Barnoldswick C of E Primary School from 1932 to 1939.

She married monumental mason Jack Fairchild on March 25, 1939, at St Mary-le-Ghyll Church, Barnoldswick, and had two sons, David, born in 1940, and Stephen, born in 1943. Mrs Fairchild also has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Over the years she has been a member of the Ladies Circle, Inner Wheel, Women’s Institute and Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS).

She is currently a member of Barnoldswick Music Society which threw a party for her.

On her birthday, she had an open house at her home and a family lunch at the Craven Heifer in Kelbrook. Other parties have been held by Ghyll Church, where she is a member, and the St Joseph’s luncheon club.

Mrs Fairchild said that having a plain diet and lack of stress had contributed to her long life.

“I don’t get worried about things,” said Mrs Fairchild, who thanked everyone for their gifts, flowers and donations, including £170 that will go to the Parkinson’s UK.
