Craven householders are being urged to be on their guard against rogue traders.
The warning has been issued by North Yorkshire Trading Standards officers in the wake of the recent storms.
It is feared unscrupulous door-to-door traders will try to cash in following the high winds.
“They may claim that a tile has fallen from a roof and should be replaced or that a tree branch is dangerous and needs to be removed immediately,” said a spokesman.
“They might offer to carry out work for a small amount of money, but this will usually be followed by a claim that further work is required at an extortionate price.”
He added that householders should never agree to work following a cold call, but if worried about their property should contact a tradesperson themselves. If work is needed, obtain three quotes.
