Schoolchildren will join the chairman of Craven District Council to raise the Commonwealth Flag over Skipton Town Hall.

The flag will be one of 500 going up at the same time in towns and cities across the country as part of Commonwealth Day on Monday.

In addition to town locations, it will also be raised on four of the highest peaks within national parks in the country.

Coun Donny Whaites, who will be joined at the ceremony by children from Water Street Primary School, said: “I am delighted the children will be joining me in this unique event.

”The Commonwealth is an important part of our nation’s past and present. With the help of the next generation, it will viable in the future.”

Stuart Anslow, headteacher of Water Street School, said said: ”Taking part in the ceremony will help the spark the children’s interest and imagination. We are looking forward to the event.”
