Community sports projects in North Craven are celebrating after being awarded £100,000 from the National Lottery.

Horton-in-Ribblesdale Playing Fields Association and Burton-in-Lonsdale Parish Council have each received £50,000 from the lottery-funded Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund.

And both will use the money to provide pavilions to act as centres for a range of sporting and social activities.

In Burton, the grant will be the first major step in the parish council’s plans to build a purpose-built pavilion on the village recreation ground. It will act as a community hub, increasing participation in sport and also act as a centre for developing new sports clubs. It will include two team changing rooms, a separate changing room for referees – to comply with Football Association and Sport England standards – an equipment room and club room for social events.

Parish clerk Susan Gregory said it was fantastic news. “We are delighted. This is the third time we’ve applied to the lottery and this time we’ve been successful. It is the first step in getting all the funding we need, but we’re now very optimistic we shall get it all.”

In Horton, the money will go towards the refurbishment of the pavilion and the provision of floodlighting for the tennis and netball court.

The project is also aimed at increasing access to sport, particularly for women and young people in the village – which is at the centre of the Three Peaks area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Carole Middleton, secretary of the Horton-in-Ribblesdale Playing Fields Association, said: “It’s thrilling to think that the pavilion will be put into good order throughout and that the community can use it as a social sports setting for many years to come.”

She added it would mean people no longer having to travel distances to access sport.

“Our playing fields are in a truly amazing setting overlooking Pen-y-ghent and has tennis courts, football pitches and a children’s playground, with wonderful spaces to play or picnic in,” she said.

She added that the project was still in need of around £10,000 more to finish it off and sponsors would be welcome.

Sport England property director Charles Johnston said the Inspired Facilities Fund had had a huge impact on grassroots sport across the country. “Since 2011, we’ve invested £88 million into more than 1,600 projects to improve and refurbish sports clubs and transform non-sporting venues into vibrant community sports clubs.”

Skipton MP Julian Smith described the funding as an important investment in ensuring excitement and passion from the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics became a lasting legacy.
