Skipton ultrarunner Andy Jackson is nursing some big blisters.

But his pain is for a good cause – he has just completed Wainwright’s 192-mile Coast to Coast route in under three days to raise funds for the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue team.

Andy arrived at Robin Hood’s Bay two days 19 hours and 20 minutes after leaving St Bees on the Cumbrian coast.

He crossed three national parks on a route which walkers normally take two weeks to complete. He was on the go for 67 hours and took only six hours sleep.

Andy was supported along the way by team members from UWFRA, co-ordinated by his girlfriend – and fellow rescue team member – Rachel Platt.

His progress was monitored using a GPS tracking device and this was also used on the event’s Facebook site, which attracted thousands of followers .

Andy, 45, a team leader at Craven College, is a keen ultrarunner and has taken part in the Ultra – Trail du Mont Blanc across the Alps as well as the major events in the Lakes and the Dales.

He has been a member of UWFRA for 21 years, which has included 13 years as an underground leader. He is currently a surface leader.

He has so far raised about £5,000, smashing his initial target of £1,500.

He said: “The weather was pretty bad throughout the run and I must say the last 30 miles can only be described as running barefoot over broken glass - and I have huge blisters and some missing toenails to prove it.

“I am so pleased I completed the route and in doing so not only gaining great publicity for the team – without whose support I could not have undertaken the challenge – but for the extra funds we have brought in.

“We are all volunteers and rely on public donations and our own year-round fundraising efforts to keep going.

“Our annual running costs are now over £40,000 and my run was to raise extra funds towards a much needed extension to our headquarters in Grassington.”

Team president Jeremy Daggett broke off from lambing time to welcome Andy’s very late arrival at the finish.
