The latest major annual event to support a Silsden teenager who broke his neck while playing rugby will take place this month.
The third tag rugby event for Nathan Cubitt will be staged at Keighley Rugby Union Club, in Utley, on Sunday, May 25.
Nathan was badly hurt while playing for his under-17s team in November 2011, when he was 16 years old.
This left him paralysed from the armpits down, although he has some movement in his arms and wrists. He cannot grip or pick up items and will never be able to walk again.
His mum, Sue Cubitt, said: “Nathan is attending physio on a weekly basis to help maintain and improve movement of his arms and legs. He is having to relearn how to use his arms and hands for everyday activities.
“We can see the improvements all the time as he gets stronger and he can now propel his wheelchair on his own for short distances.
“By Nathan’s own admission, he believes he is a better person for this. That is something to be in awe of, for him to say such words at such a young age.
“However, Nathan has matured and almost evolved again to be who he is today.”
She added that support for Nathan from others involved in rugby had been “phenomenal”.
Proceeds from this month’s tag rugby event will be split equally between funding Nathan’s ongoing care costs and the Matt Hampson Foundation, which provides advice, support or treatment for people suffering serious injury or disability while taking part in sport.
The fundraiser, which starts at 10am, is being run in partnership with Try Tag Rugby Ltd.
There will be fancy dress tag rugby, Try Tag events, face painters, a hog roast, refreshments, tug of war, inflatable castles and lots of other fun for the family.
The charge for entering a team of ten is £40. Single entry to the event is £5. People wanting to enter a side for Try Tag Rugby must have three women in their team.
