A documentary maker, inspired by the Yorkshire Dales, is to launch a film which explores the history of Grassington.

Geoff Kerr, of Boy Pike Productions, is preparing to show The Settlement at Grassington Festival on June 19.

In making the film, he has worked closely with local historian Cynthia Colley and had cash support from the Heritage Lottery Fund's All Our Stories initiative and administrative help from Grassington Hub.

Sales of the documentary will benefit the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust along with schools which will receive free copies.

Mr Kerr said: “It’s been a really collaborative project for the local community with over 40 people, all volunteers, giving their time to help put together the film, which is a purely not for profit venture.”

Sarah Brewer, of the Clapham-based Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, said “We are delighted to be involved with this very worthwhile project and look forward to seeing the film soon.

"All the money raised will support our projects that help to care for the landscape, environment, communities and economy of the Dales.”

The film explores the lives of the people who have settled in Grassington over the past 12,000 years, focusing on the area's mining and textile heritage.

It explores the history and geology, botany, archaeology, agriculture, industry local characters and even the legendary magic of the Dales.

Copies will be available for purchase from Grassington Hub, Grassington Folk Museum, Dales Book Centre, Dales Toffee Shop, BoyPikeVideo@btinternet.com and the Yorkshire Dales National Park centres.

Mr Kerr and the Boy Pike Productions crew are now working on the Upper Wharfedale Audio Archive, a series of interviews with residents of the dale, talking about their life histories and memories, for use at Grassington Folk Museum.

l The Settlement will be shown at Grassington Town Hall on June 19 from 8pm
