FURTHER work at Skipton Town Hall has been recommended for approval.

The latest scheme involves the demolition of the toilet block on Jerry Croft and the erection of a new accessible entrance on the south elevation of the Grade Two listed building.

Listed building consent is also being sought.

The proposals - which will go before Craven District Council's planning committee on Monday - include ground floor toilets and the installation of a lift.

In a report to the planning meeting, officers say the current toilet block is incongruous and out of keeping with the town hall, failing to respect its style and the character of the conservation area.

The new entrance would be curved and would be finished in zinc.

"The proposal has been designed to contrast with the original building, while complementing the buildings to the east in terms of form," says the report. "The contemporary design, which would be restrained in detailing, would provide an interesting feature within the street scene."

The application has won the support of English Heritage, which says the new entrance would be a visually interesting addition.

Planning officers have recommended approval, although the final decision rests with the Secretary of State.
