A deputy headteacher is tackling a gruelling running challenge to raise money for bike storage facilities at his school.

John Parkin, who lives in Eastburn, is taking part this summer's Ultra Trail de Mont Blanc, a 104-mile race.

Only 2,300 competitors from nearly three times as many applicants have won places in the August event, which starts and finishes in Chamonix.

Mr Parkin, 40, who was appointed deputy head at Oxenhope Primary School in December, hopes to raise £1,000 through sponsorship.

“At the moment there is no proper place at school where children can leave their bikes,” he said. “If we raise £200 we can get some standard metal loops to chain bikes to, but for £1,000 we can create a bespoke facility and do some bicycle maintenance sessions, cycle training etc.”

Mr Parkin has completed several long-distance runs, but has never attempted over 100 miles.

“I’ve done the Fellsman – which is 60 miles – a couple of times but this is a new challenge for me,” he said.

Anyone wishing to sponsor Mr Parkin can contact the school on office@oxenhope.bradford.sch.uk or 01535 642271.
