A BARNOLDSWICK woman who formed a cancer support group has been recognised with a national award.

Mary Brennan, the founder and trustee of Barnoldswick and Earby Bosom Friends, has received an award from Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Vicky Clement-Jones Award is for volunteers who have, or have had cancer themselves, and make a significant difference to the lives of people with cancer.

It is presented to just 10 people in the UK.

Linda Gibbons, one of the volunteers with Bosom Friends, nominated Mary for the prestigious award.

"I can honestly say I have never ever met anyone like Mary," said Linda, who was introduced to the group when her husband Peter was diagnosed with leukaemia. "She is the kindest person I know and goes out of her way to care for and look after anyone who joins the group.

“The incredibly warm welcome we received when we first met Mary at the first meeting we attended is what has inspired us to become more involved in the group helping others affected by cancer.

"There is no one more deserving than Mary for this award and I'm delighted her nomination was accepted.”

Mary, who lives on Kelbrook Road, was unable to attend the awards ceremony in London held during National Volunteers Week, which started on Sunday and runs until Saturday, but it was posted to Linda who presented Mary with a framed certificate.

Mary, although instrumental in establishing Bosom Friends, was keen to point out that "Bosom Friends wouldn’t be what it is today and wouldn’t be able to do what they do if it wasn’t for people who give so generously of their time working in the shop and fundraising".

"I feel it is very much a group award rather than a personal one,” said Mary.

The award is quite timely as Bosom Friends is looking for more volunteers to become involved in a number of initiatives.

Catherine Oldfield, a trustee for the group, said: "We are keen to spread the word about the work of Bosom Friends to ensure that anyone affected by cancer in the Pendle, Craven and Ribble Valley area doesn’t miss out on our help and support."

Anyone interested in volunteering or taking part in a fundraising challenge should call Catherine on 07779 723738 or Kate on 07591 040862 or email the group through the website at bebosomfriends.org.uk
