FORMER Settle College student James Metcalfe has been awarded the coveted maroon beret of the Parachute Regiment after passing the P Company selection course at Catterick Garrison.

While an officer cadet at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, James was promoted to the cadet government body and was a member of the award-winning Sovereign’s Platoon.

He was selected to represent the British Army in the annual military skills competition (The Sandhurst Cup) held at West Point Military Academy in New York, competing against teams including Chilean Special Forces and the Chinese People’s Army.

After receiving his commission, Second Lieutenant Metcalfe completed the three-month Platoon Commanders’ Battle Course at Brecon and jungle warfare training in Kenya.

He will now join the Second Battalion (2Para), part of 16 Air Assault Brigade based in Colchester, and is soon to leave for Kenya with his platoon.
