Skipton’s High Street was declared “full” of spectators just after 11.10am, shortly before the Tour de France “caravan” of sponsor vehicles starting coming through, to the mounting excitement of the crowds.

As the Tour cavalcade headed into the Dales, late arrivals in the centre of Skipton were being directed to the spectator hubs in the town hall car park and in the canal basin.

The crowds were treated to sun and blue skies after a wet and cloudy start to the day.

What a fantastic weekend. Well done to the organisers and to all the thousands of people who showed the world that we know how to enjoy our selfs in Yorkshire, and especially to the competitors - they showed just how fit they are, especially on the hills of day 2, good luck to them all for the rest of the tour. The event met all my expectations, even the weather was good! The only disappointment was seeing poor Mark Cavendish crashing out at the finish of day 1.
This weekend was a once in a lifetime event for Yorkshire, but I'm sure there will be other top classing cycling events coming to the county following this success - it looks likely there will be an annual Tour of Yorkshire starting next year.
