THOUSANDS of people were buzzing as they gathered on the High Street to watch the Tour de France's main peloton of riders come through Skipton.

"It was the best sporting experience that I've seen live," said Liam Bend, of Chesterfield. "It was absolutely electric and really impressive."

"It was pretty amazing," added cycling fan Charlie Lloyd, of London. "But there are three more weeks left and the riders still have a lot of hard work to do."

Cyclists Simon McCall, and his son Alex, 10, of Macclesfield, watched the race from a vantage point on Grassington Road in Skipton.

"It's great to see the whole spectacle," said Simon.

Alex added: "There were loads and loads of bikes. You don't normally get to see them that well on telly - it was better to see them in person."

Skipton sisters Rebecca and Charlotte Bickley were excited to be part of what Charlotte called a "pretty cool" event.

Rebecca added: "We've never had anything quite like this. It's the first time in history for this area."
