SKIPTON MP Julian Smith has welcomed an extra £5.2 million to be spent on tackling potholes on North Yorkshire's roads.

He lobbied in support of a county council bid for a share of a £168 million government pot on offer nationally.

Repair works will have to be carried out by March next year and the council has to publish quarterly updates on what has been done.

Mr Smith says the funding is in addition to a £3.2 million award given in March to help repair roads damaged by severe weather.

He added: "I know from driving around my constituency that there are many roads which continue to be in urgent need of repair.

"This latest money will support the efforts to tackle the problem of potholes, which can cause major challenges for anyone who travels across North Yorkshire."
