THE National Trust has said it was proud to be a part of the Tour de France - one of the biggest event in the county’s history.

More than 1,000 people camped under the stars with the National Trust - including at Buckden where the campers were at the heart of the action.

Joanna Royle, National Trust’s head of marketing and supporter development for Yorkshire, said: "It was wonderful to see the scenes across Yorkshire as everyone embraced Le Tour.

"For the National Trust, it was an amazing opportunity to be a proactive key player in helping to deliver this once in a lifetime event and our visitors, staff, tenants and volunteers all embraced the festival atmosphere. Our experience was incredibly positive and has helped to form and enhance partnerships with many different organisations.”

Now the event has passed, the National Trust is firmly committed to building on the legacy of Le Tour.

Joanna added: "The whole weekend helped to showcase the best of Yorkshire. Economically this can only be a positive for organisations like the National Trust, boosting future tourism revenue to the county. But it has also given us the opportunity to highlight the outdoor and cycling opportunities to be had at our places.

"Since the start of the year, we’ve developed a partnership with British Cycling to host Skyride Local bike rides at our places. We see so many people turning up on their bikes to visit the places in our care and we wanted to create more opportunities for people to enjoy the countryside in this way.”
