THE only remaining original member of the Sutton-in-Craven Community Centre had a special role to play at the building's golden jubilee celebration.

Edith Sugden, 96, cut a ceremonial cake at a party to celebrate the North Street centre's opening 50 years ago.

Committee member Les Joy said the centre opened in February 1964, approximately 10 months after planning permission was granted in April 1963 to build a centre for pensioners at a cost of £1,907.

The architects' bill for the building was £527 and the Nuffield Trust gave a grant of £500 towards the costs.

At the first committee meeting, it was decided to name the Sutton Senior Citizens' Rest Centre.

In September 2011, the committee applied to the Charity Commission to change the name to the Sutton-in-Craven Community Centre with a view to attracting and catering for all ages of the community, young and old.

All those attending the 50th anniversary celebration enjoyed a buffet followed by a quiz where members were invited to identify places of interest in Sutton from photos, which depicted scenes from unusual angles and of historical interest.
