PUPILS from Ingleton Primary School were named Young Growers of the Year title after winning the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s Children’s Vegetable Garden Competition.

Gardening experts Martin Fish and Nigel Harrison had the difficult task of judging the 14 finalists and picking the overall winner.

More than 200 schools across the region have fruit and vegetable boxes supplied by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society.

At the beginning of the year, pupils start planting their boxes with fruit and vegetables, and spend the months leading up to the Great Yorkshire Show tending their crops and keeping a diary detailing how the plants have grown and how their boxes have developed.

Garden show steward Mike Prest said the standard of entries had been particularly high this year.

“This has been a really successful competition this year. Our judges spent four hours deciding between the 14 finalists before making their final decision. The winning box was excellent and the children had done a brilliant job,” he said.
