TWO people were slightly injured when a cow escaped from Skipton Auction Mart this morning.

The alarm was raised at 10.30am as the animal headed towards the town centre, injuring one passer-by.

It then went into Aireville Park where police said another person sustained minor injuries.

A police firearms team was called to the scene and shot the animal.

Total over reaction. Farmer goes in, rounds it up, loads it onto trailer/livestock wagon. Simples!!

Total waste of an animal, not to mention money. The number of police and vehicles which were up at the park was stupid for one beast.

I was there and the police were an absolute embarrassment! Shouting and balling stressing the cow out even further- no need to shoot the cow what so ever-

Obviously not a clue when it comes to animals

I was part of the auction team that was involved in this, the animal was wound up and was aiming to attack people that were close enough, auction staff were forced out of the area when the firing squad arrived with their rubber bullets( ridiculous I know) however this cow was entered in the cull cow section and was going for meat anyway so people with comment saying "a waste of meat" that is incorrect, shooting the animal was a last resort chosen by the numerous amount of police in the area. And if allowed by the police the auction staff were suggesting a different approach, but after already injuring 2 people the police deemed this dangerous and risking more public injuries was unnesecary!

....until it injured another person who tried to round it up....then it's a failure to protect the public and the resulting "Ambulance Chasing firm "claim makes the case for culling the animal the correct one.

Hindsight is a brilliant thing but at the time, considering it had already injured two people, although the people sent in might have more experience in these situations, there's still a risk it'll injure them.

Don't criticise the Police! They were called by the Auction to deal with a situation they had failed to contain.
They had their chance to catch it but failed and it went on to injure two people......the Police would have been to blame if they had allowed another 'attempt' which may have failed again but resulted in further injury.
The decision to call in firearms won't have been made lightly and it would have taken time for them to arrive....the auction staff obviously didn't catch it during the wait!
