CHANGES to the way Craven electors register to vote are underway.

This week, more than 40,000 letters are being sent to householders across Craven informing them of the changes introduced by the Electoral Commission.

And although the vast majority will be automatically transferred to the new system, some will have to provide more details, such as their National Insurance number, date of birth, or confirmation of address.

Annette Moppett, electoral registration officer for Craven District Council, said:

"If you receive a letter asking you to update your registration details it is now a lot simpler, clearer and faster to do it online.

"It should take around five minutes and you just need your NI number ready. I would urge anyone who needs help with the forms not to delay and call our helpline."

The Electoral Commission, the UK’s election watchdog, has called for the introduction of Individual Electoral Registration since 2003, as it will lead to a more secure electoral register.

Registration can now be done on line at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote as well as by returning the registration form. For help, contact the council helpline, 01756 700600.
