THE ninth Art in the Pen will be staged in Skipton next weekend.

It is a unique art exhibition which sees the cow and sheep pens of Skipton Auction Mart transformed into mini art galleries out of which local and national artists exhibit and sell their original works of art.

More than 130 artists will take part in this year’s event, which will be held next Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17.

On show will be contemporary art, including sculptures, photography, glasswork, textiles, recycled materials, watercolours, print, ceramics, pen and ink, woodwork, etchings, and, of course, paintings.

Held annually, Art in the Pen was launched in 2006 and is well-respected by those in the art world and much-loved by those who appreciate exploring works of art and meeting world class artists

“It is the support of the public that ensures the success of the event,” said Andrew Lynan, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the charity that runs Art in the Pen. “We provide the logistics, but the public and artists provide the atmosphere, and it is the atmosphere that makes this art event such an enjoyable experience.”

Although much of the art is affordable – with prices starting at £1 – it is not all about the sales. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal and members of the public can enjoy a massive range of art disciplines and chat to the artists about their work.

“It makes the art world more accessible to everyone and certainly less overwhelming,” said Mr Lynan. “There is something quite inspirational to be found in a cattle auction hosting stunning works of art.”

The exhibition is open from 10am to 4pm each day and admission is £2 (free for under 16s), which includes a catalogue detailing the work of the artists.
