LOCALS and visitors are invited to join volunteer guides for the last two Ribblehead railway walks of the season on next two Wednesdays, August 20 and 27.
The walking tours explain the railway heritage of Ribblehead and Blea Moor and there is a choice of two routes, both of which start at Ribblehead Visitor Centre at 10.25am.
One is a short walk of approximately two-and-a-half miles covering the shanty town sites and returns to Ribblehead at approximately 1pm in time for the 1.18pm train south to Leeds or the 2.05pm train north to Carlisle.
The long walk is approximately five miles and goes towards Blea Moor to view the Littledale area where stone was obtained to construct the viaduct. This tour returns to Ribblehead at approximately 3pm.
On both walks the guides will talk about the history of the railway’s construction, the life of the railway builders and refurbishment of the viaduct.
Waterproofs and stout footwear are required for both tours and a packed lunch is essential for the longer tour to Blea Moor.
