A WELL-KNOWN football referee who officiated at more than 1,700 local matches has died at the age of 83.

James Edward Dick, known as Jim, died peacefully at Bradford Royal Infirmary with his family at his side.

Jim was born in Barnoldswick and was educated at Rainhall Road School and Barnoldswick Secondary Modern. He left at 16 and went to work for Peter Reed's textile company, before doing his National Service in the Royal Air Force. He was a keen boxer and became the heavyweight champion of his regiment.

After finishing his RAF service he returned to Peter Reed and quickly worked his way into a senior management position. He stayed with the firm for more than 30 years.

Jim had a lifelong passion for football and became a popular referee, in charge of games in the Craven League, the East Lancashire League, the Ribble Valley League and the Pendle Sunday Charity League. He took his last match at the age of 73 in 2004. He also played a major part in the Colne and Nelson Referees' Society, and was its president for several years.

He later took on the role of treasurer and had only recently given up this post. His services to refereeing in the area were recognised in 2008 when he was given a 'lifetime achievement ' award at the Pendle Sports Awards.

He leaves his wife of 50 years Pat, brother Alf, daughters Sharon and Katherine and grandchildren Matthew, Oliver, Dominic, William, Thomas and Hannah.
