SETTLE Storytelling Festival has launched a drawing competition – to design a space ship.

It ties in with the space theme that will run throughout this year’s festival, which takes place from Friday, October 10 to Sunday, October 12.

It also coincides with UN World Space Week.

The competition is open to anyone aged seven or older and the drawing must include ways to change speed and direction, a way to get electric power, instruments for scientific experiments and a way to communicate with earth.

“We want to encourage science,” said festival director Sita Brand.

The competition will be judged by Hannah Earnshaw and Ryan McDonald, who hope to join the Mars One Mission and be among the first human settlers on Mars, and winners will receive signed pictures of astronauts Neil Armstrong and Mars One merchandise.

Entries should be sent to Settle Stories, Town Hall, Market Place, Settle, BD24 9EJ or emailed to info@settlestories.org.uk, with the subject line Space Design Competition. The closing date is Thursday, October 9.
