A FORMER schoolteacher and resident of a Barnoldswick care home has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Florence Wright, who now lives at Cravenside Home for Older People, was born in Earby on September 10, 1914, the daughter of well-known local plumber Ebor Smith.

Following her education at Skipton Girls' High School, Florence became a teacher at Appletreewick and Worksop in Nottinghamshire before returning to West Craven and teaching at Earby's New Road School and Gisburn Road School in Barnoldswick.

She has served as a steward at Mount Zion Baptist Church and is an active member of Earby Music Society.

Many years ago, she wrote a book - Picking Sticks With Stockings On - which chronicled her memories of life in Earby and was published by Earby History Society.

She was married to Norman Wright and the couple had two sons, Peter and David, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Since 2006, she has lived at Cravenside, where she enjoyed a birthday party last Wednesday with family and friends and even sang her favourite song, On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at.
