THERE was an encouraging number of new exhibitors at Ingleton Horticultural Show.

And chairman John Tennant said hoped these numbers would continue to grow to give support to this traditional event.

There had been a fear that entries would be down due to a mild winter and hot dry summer, but this wasn't borne out on the day.

Hugh and Linda Redhead took the Bownass Challenge Cup for most points in the show, and their all-round performance in the vegetable and flower classes yielded quite a collection of the other trophies.

They included the Humpage Challenge Trophy for most points in the onion and shallot classes, the Redhead Trophy for most points in the local section, the IHA Challenge Cup for most points in the flower section, best local rose, best rose and best sweet peas.

There was a tie for the most for the most points in the vegetable section, with Hugh and Linda sharing the trophy with Dan Unsworth.

Dan also won the IHA Glass Tankard for the combined carrot and parsnip classes, the Association's Trophy for the best exhibit in the local section, the National Vegetable Society Medal for the best vegetable and Ken Lewis Trophy for the best local exhibit,

First time exhibitor Janet Spencer of Ingleton made a good start to showing at Ingleton, winning two of the three tomato classes. Her spaghetti squash and pot of herbs were clear winners too.

In the flower section, Harry Carr swept the board in the chrysanthemum classes, winning the National Chrysanthemum Society Silver Medal as well as the Fuchsia Society Spoon for the best fuchsia exhibit.

Dave Woodhouse showed the best dahlia, with his entry judged the best overall in the horticultural section for which he earned the Westmorland and North Lancashire Federation of Horticultural Show Society's Blue Ribbon. He also took the National Dahlia Society Silver Medal.

Mrs B Taylor was the overall points winner in the domestic section and Gill Ormrod took the best in section prize for her loaf of bread. In the floral art section, Heather Dawson took first place in all four classes, winning the Metcalfe Challenge Cup, and top honours in the novice class went to Hilary Rigby who took home the IHA Challenge Cup.

This year, Ella Hodkinson gained the highest number of points in the children's section. She also won cups for an arrangement of flowers and best handicraft in the over tens. Tommy Cockett won the best exhibit in the children's section with Jake Tilburn, Freya Plowright and Dan Whiteley taking home cups and trophies.
