A YOUNG Barnoldswick councillor and his election team have won a national award.

Cllr Lyle Davy and the Pendle Conservatives won the National Excellence Award for Campaigning at a ceremony dubbed “the Conservative Oscars” for his election win in Coates ward in May this year.

The 18 year old became the first Conservative councillor in the Coates ward since 1976, beating incumbent Lib Dem Lindsay Gaskell by 49 votes.

Lyle decided to stand after meeting Prime Minister David Cameron at the Alma Inn, Laneshaw Bridge, in April 2013, and welcomed him to his hometown one year on just days before his election, when he visited Silentnight in Barnoldswick.

His win saw the Conservatives remain as the largest party on Pendle Council and gave them control of West Craven by one seat.

Announcing the award win at a ceremony in Westminster, Emma Pidding OBE paid tribute to the hard work of the 30 young people who got behind Lyle and helped him to secure victory.

“This isn’t just a win for me, but for every single person who helped," said Cllr Davy. "This is for those people who believed and came and did their bit. What was incredible was that the people who joined in weren’t particularly political, but just believed in what I was trying to do."
