SKIPTON couple Mike and Liz Watson will talk about their work in war-ravaged northern Uganda at the town's Quaker Meeting House on Sunday.

In two periods, totalling almost two years, they worked in an area struggling to recover from the violence and destruction of the Lord's Resistance Army, a group which forcibly recruited young people locally and then compelled them to carry out atrocities.

Mike dealt with the aftermath of this trauma by helping to set up a functioning mental health system, while Liz worked on improving the way in which physical illnesses were treated, especially drug-resistant tuberculosis, a great problem in this area.

Both will speak of their experiences, humorous and inspiring as well as challenging.

Event organiser Keith Reeves said: "Their talk perfectly epitomises the theme of Quaker Week this year which is Let Your Lives Speak.

"Quakers believe that every one of us should listen to the quiet voice within us, what some might call the voice of God, and base their actions upon it. Consequently we do not have priests or rituals, just a discipline that helps us to listen and respond."

The talk takes place at 1pm and will be preceded by a soup lunch at noon and the regular Meeting for Worship at 10.30am. Everyone is welcome at all events.
