CRAVEN residents rallied behind the World's Biggest Coffee Morning.

Events were held across the district with the aim of raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Residents at Threshfield Court care home invited relatives, friends and villagers to join them for coffee and raised nearly £120.

Skipton’s award-winning fish and chip restaurant, Bizzie Lizzie’s, on Swadford Street, swapped frying for baking to raise more than £275.

Katie Davison from the family-run business said: “Cancer is something that touches the lives of every family in the UK and ours is no exception. Macmillan have been and continue to be very supportive."

Also supporting the initiative was the town's Castle Inn.

It served up cakes, muffins, cookies and scones, made by the waitresses, bar staff and chefs.

Landlord Calvin Dow said: "We had people coming in from when I opened the doors at 9.30am, right the way through to the early evening.

"As the coffee and cake morning was such a huge success, we have decided to organise a monthly coffee and cake morning on the last Friday of every month throughout the year, supporting a different local charity each month."

Representatives of the Dyneley House Patient Participation Group entertained patients by making refreshments and serving cake whilst they were waiting for their appointments.

Practice manager Antony Radley said: "We've had a fantastic time. It was great to work together and our patients enjoyed having a slice of cake whilst waiting to see a doctor or a nurse - and we have been able to support a very worthwhile charity too."

The venture raised more than £130 for the cancer charity.

Skipton MP Julian Smith, who was in Westminster for the Recall of Parliament on Friday, joined other MPs at a coffee morning at the Houses of Parliament.

He said: “I know dozens of coffee mornings were held across my constituency and I wanted to show my support by attending the event organised in Westminster due to the Recall of Parliament. Congratulations go to all those who organised or attended events and raised money for this important cause.”

Elsewhere, Burton-in-Lonsdale's Macmillan Coffee Morning raised £403 and was very well attended by both locals and visitors alike.
