PUPILS at a Craven school are putt-ing on the style for new links in a partnership with Settle Golf Club.

Giggleswick School has joined forces with the club in a drive for sporting excellence that is benefiting both - pupils are getting regular practice sessions and coaching in return for taking on responsibility for course maintenance.

Officials are continuing to administer the club and its membership in what has been hailed a "win-win" situation for both school and club.

Golf club secretary Alan Wright said: "The partnership has given the club a new lease of life by ensuring the long-term viability of this unique nine-hole course. The future of the club depends on the introduction of youngsters to the game to form a solid foundation. for the club in the long term. The partnership is a win/win situation."

The arrangement has enabled pupils to get regular coaching from Bentham Golf Club professional Nick Barron, plus reserved practice times. And former Giggleswick pupils living within a 20-mile radius of the course are entitled to special membership rates.

Teacher Steve Robertson, in charge of golf at the school, said pupils were enjoying and appreciating the opportunity to get better at the game.

"We have a significant number of beginners and improvers as well as some low handicappers. Greater access to the course has allowed the sport to flourish."
