NORTHERN Rail, the UK’s largest train operator, has donated three pairs of two-way radios to local community group, the Friends of the DalesRail, which offers guided walks to visitors on the historic Settle-Carlisle line.

The radios will the walk leaders to keep in touch and to ensure the safety of those taking part in the free rambles.

Pete Myers from Northern Rail said: “We’re pleased to support the Friends of DalesRail in their efforts to bring more visitors to this glorious part of the country, and especially in this wholly practical way.

"Walking in the Dales is a wonderful experience, but there are always dangers, especially if the weather takes a turn for the worse. The Friends always have someone at the front and the back of these groups and we trust that these radios will help them communicate better and so promote the safety of all concerned.”

Moya McNamara, chairman of Friends of DalesRail, said: “Our society, which is run entirely by volunteers, is delighted to receive the support of Northern Rail in this way. Our leaders and backups do their utmost to ensure the safety of the participants and the provision of these radios offer additional security.”
