PUPILS at Eastburn Junior and Infant School were left spellbound by their latest project.

Children from years two and six took part in a Magic and Mystery Day.

They dressed as characters including Harry Potter, witches and wizards, and tackled a range of activities.

Year two youngsters studied The Worst Witch and made magic hats as part of design technology, studied creative dance and examined materials in science.

Their year six colleagues looked at Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Matilda, and used the poem The Magic Box – by Kit Wright – to inspire descriptive writing and develop their creativity and vocabulary.

They also studied herbology and potions, and some maths lessons were adapted for the theme.

"This project has been run for several years now and is very popular," said a school spokesman.

"The children have a wonderful time and are given the opportunity to explore a range of skills they wouldn't normally access and work with a different year group."
