Scarborough 35 Yarnbury 27

YARNBURY were forced to field a much-changed back division for their visit to the palatial facilities at Scarborough.

It meant that Graham Maycock was drafted in from the Hornets to form a new centre pairing with utility player Lee Mortimer.

Skipper Oliver Cashman returned at scrum half and he was to feature in the game’s defining moment.

Yarnbury had repelled a strong spell of early pressure when Cashman was sent to the sin bin by experienced referee Mike Ramsden for an infringement at a ruck.

Scarborough capitalised by scoring three converted tries to build a decisive 21-0 lead in his absence.

The first try was scored by No 8 Matthew Else after winger Joe Marshall had created the space for him. Winger Harry Dommett and centre Graeme Jeffrey added further scores before Cashman returned and all three were converted by Tom Harrison.

It says much for Yarnbury’s resilience that they battled their way back into the game. Locks Ian Maycock and Henry Griffiths repeatedly made good ground while the back row of Jimmy Cryan, Joe Bennett and James Barrett had the measure of their opponents.

Yarnbury opened their account just before half-time with a catch and drive which produced a try for hooker Tom Gilchrist.

The second half saw Yarnbury take control. Cashman took quick ball from a scrum and fed winger James Myerscough whose strength took him through the defence for the an unconverted try.

This was followed by a try from the powerful Bennett. Ollie Hardaker was off target for the third time with his conversion attempt.

Scarborough seemed powerless to stop the momentum, with the home crowd showing their frustration as Yarnbury continued to rumble forward.

Unfortunately, a stray pass was to prove costly as Scarborough centre Tom Radcliffe latched onto a loose ball to race away to score under the posts. Harrison had no trouble with the conversion.

Yarnbury still sensed they could get something from the game and Cashman scored his side’s fourth try – to earn a bonus point – after charging out of a ruck and brushing aside defenders. Hardaker converted from close in.

Jarrod Huss looked cool when he came on as a full back substitute and ripped the ball off a Scarborough forward in a ruck close in to touch down for Yarnbury’s fifth try.

Hopes of a second bonus point were killed off when the home side scored their fifth try with a timely interception from Dommett.

Yarnbury remain third in the table, one point ahead of Scarborough, courtesy of their bonus point.

lYarnbury Hornets won a rearranged match at Pontefract 2nds 31-22 and the third string won again at home to Leodiensian’s 2nds 35-7 to remain unbeaten after 13 games.
