TALENTED all-rounder Harry Maslen has narrowly missed out on international selection.

The Ilkley youngster finished fourth in the English u-20 Indoor Combined Events Championships at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

For the top three there was the reward of places in the Great Britain team in an event which also incorporated the Northern Indoor Championships.

Maslen, who has come through the ranks with Ilkley Harriers, is now coached by Sam Stanislaus at Gateshead.

The good work he has been putting into winter training was reflected by his performances in the two days of competition.

On the opening day he competed in the first four disciplines. His best placing was second in the long jump where he cleared a personal best 6.63m

He also recorded personal bests in the 60 metres where he finished third in 7.31sec and in the pole vault where he recorded a clearance at 3.81m for eighth place.

His lowest placing was 11th in the shot where he recorded 11.01. His combined efforts left him one point off third place.

There were two more personal bests in three events on the second day. He was third in the 60m hurdles, high jump and 1000m.

His times of 8.58 in the hurdles and 2.48.28 in the 1000m were both personal bests. A clearance at 1.89 in the high jump helped him to an impressive total of 4,943 points.

His friend and training partner from Gateshead, Anthony Hogg, won the competition breaking the 5000 point barrier.

Maslen gained a silver medal as runner up to Hogg in the Northern Championships and has been selected as a non travelling reserve for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team in the u-20 International Indoor match in Nogent-sur-oise, France this weekend..
