A SECURITY guard who was found in possession of cannabis when stopped by police on his way through Hellifield has been given a conditional discharge, but ordered to pay £165 in costs and victims surcharge.

Imran Mahmood, 37, originally denied being in possession of two rolled joints and 351 milligrams of herbal cannabis on Skipton Road on August 18 when he appeared at Skipton Magistrates' Court in November last year.

He was due to stand trial next month, but on Friday, he changed his plea to guilty.

Police found the joints in the cabin of the car, and a search revealed a bag of loose herbal cannabis in a jacket in the boot, the court heard.

Mahmood, of Trondheim Parkway West, Dunfermline, had started taking the drug as a way of easing back pain and had continued taking it.

The father of five had now signed up to a programme to stop smoking both cigarettes and cannabis and had noticed an improvement in his health.
