STUDENTS studying for a foundation degree in environmental conservation at Craven College have been looking at the future of Threshfield Quarry.

The industry-led project has included research, a feasibility study and pitching ideas for the quarry's redevelopment.

The brief, overseen by Dr Roger Martlew, chairman of Threshfield Quarry Development Trust, was to generate ideas for the future commercial viability of the site, for the benefit of the wider community, with the emphasis on education, cultural heritage, arts and the natural environment

Dr Martlew said: "We are looking at sympathetic economic development activities that will contribute to the local economy. This is a major, long-term project that addresses the needs of people and nature in an innovative and sustainable way.

"The exciting thing about this is looking to create employment opportunities at Threshfield Quarry. The ideas that students have come up with have strong educational themes and practically they have shown that they will feed jobs and help the redevelopment of the quarry and local area."

Course leader Gillian Thom added: "Industry links are important for our students, helping them experience real projects where they can develop their research and ideas in a professional manner.

"We are delighted to be working with Threshfield Quarry Development Trust this year. In the past we have successfully worked with Friends of Ilkley Moor, Wycoller Country Park and The Stepping Stones Project, Aireville Park and for the future we hope to develop further links with the launch of our BSc in Conservation and Countryside Management this year.”
