A VILLAGE gala is under threat - because too few people are willing to help with organising it.

The 44th Horton-in-Ribblesdale gala is set to take place on the first Saturday in June.

But organisers say that unless more people come forward quickly the gala may well have to fold.

Committee member Heather Huddleston said: "Sadly, we are in the position that it's the same few people doing everything and that can't go on.

"We desperately need new people to get involved and we need new ideas too.

"If the gala was to fold it could also put other events such as the Penyghent Fell Race in jeopardy. And without the income from the gala the future of the village hall itself could be in doubt.

"The village needs people to step in and help as soon as possible."

The village's Women's Institute branch closed recently because there were too few members to make it sustainable.

There is a meeting in the village hall tonight, starting at 7.30pm. Anyone interested in helping who cannot attend the meeting, or would like more information, is asked to contact Heather Huddlestone on 01729 860396.

Last year' gala was big success despite heavy rain, while 106 competitors took part in the Penyghent Fell Race.
