Ben Rhydding’s under-14 girls won the Yorkshire Youth League title at the Grammar School at Leeds on Sunday after beating their close rivals Wakefield 1-0 in a tense battle.

Rhydding started the day with a tough match against Doncaster, who defended in numbers and attempted to catch Rhydding on the break.

Rhydding’s only goal finally arrived courtesy of Jemima Jaggar. Nisha Cant had her shot saved and Kirsty McMillan’s follow up was clawed off the line straight to

Jaggar, who slotted home.

Rhydding were then up against favourites Wakefield, who had beaten them three times this season.

Rhydding started the brighter and attacked in numbers, with Becky Hadfield and McMillan linking well to feed Gabby Pope, Sophie Armitage and Jaggar up front.

Goalkeeper Sophie Dale was called into action, and produced some fine saves, before Hadfield’s piece of magic at the top of the Wakefield D. She created the space to unleash a fierce shot into the corner of the goal.

Wakefield upped their intensity in an effort to grab a late equaliser but Rhydding’s defence held firm. Goalscorer Hadfield was on hand on her own goal line to bring down, control and clear a deflected shot from a penalty corner, which had wrong-footed Dale and was heading for the back of the net.

The final match of the day was against Leeds Adel. However, with Rhydding now two points clear of Wakefield, who had completed their league programme and with Adel five points adrift, the title was already Rhydding’s.

That said, Rhydding wanted to finish on a high and attacked from the start, restricting Leeds Adel to few forays into the D, while at the other end of the pitch, the Leeds Adel defence and keeper held firm and the score remained goalless.

This weekend sees the end of season league play-offs at Wakefield, where the top eight teams compete on a knockout basis, before the Rhydding girls head to Chester on April 19 for their North Round of the English Hockey Cup.

Ben Rhydding’s under-14 girls B team also had a successful day by clinching the Division Six championship.

After beating both Harrogate C and Wakefield C 2-0, with two goals from Amber Medway and one each from Milly McAneny and Darcy Hartley, they came out on top.
