THE world’s most famous recording studio has welcomed a group of 250 amateur singers to record their new album.

Members of Rock Up and Sing! from Skipton and Harrogate descended on Abbey Road Studios in London for two days to enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime experience of recording in the same place as legends including The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Oasis and Radiohead.

As well as three tracks recorded by the adult singers, Rock Up and Sing!’s Youth Choir contributed three tracks for the album, which will be available to buy in the summer.

Choir director Rhiannon Gayle said: “It was a truly fantastic weekend and an experience we’ll all remember for the rest of our lives.

“The choir members had worked incredibly hard to prepare for the recording and it really paid off – the sound they produced was incredible. I’ve been back to Abbey Road since then to finalise the recordings and I can confidently say the album is going to blow people’s socks off!”

The singers were supported by a team of musicians, including Katie Bell on piano, Andrew Whittaker, Richard Jevons and John Marley. Rhiannon conducted most of the songs but assistant musical director Andrew Matthews led a warm up and conducted Let the River Run on the final day of recording.

However, it was not all work – there was also time to take advantage of following in the footsteps of some of the world’s biggest bands.

Choir member Helen Eastwood said: “There was a steady stream of choir members having their photo take on the famous Abbey Road crossing and writing on the graffiti walls outside. The Youth Choir went to see Wicked in the West End and quite a few of the adult choir members spent some extra time in London after we had finished recording.

“It was an exhausting weekend, but the opportunity of a lifetime, and we’re all so proud and grateful to have been involved. We can’t wait to hear the results when the album is finished later in the year.”
