TWO Skipton men have raised more than £2,700 for Manorlands Hospice after tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks twice within 24 hours.

Just after midnight on February 7, Sean Gill and Gary Findlay set off on their gruelling challenge following three months of training in wind, rain, ice, snow and hailstones.

Sean, who completed the challenge in memory of his mum, Mary, and dad, Clifford, said: “On the day of the challenge, the ground was still treacherous under foot but we could not have asked for better weather, it was gorgeous. I ended up with lots of blisters and I fell twice, cutting open my knees but I just kept going because I wanted to give something back for the care my mum and my family received at Manorlands.

"I want to make sure others have the opportunity to receive care at the most difficult time in their lives.”

Throughout the 24-hour challenge, Sean's partner, Alison Christie, used Facebook to keep supporters informed about the men's progress.

Gary said: “Although we knew we would be walking without sleep we did not quite anticipate the full impact of walking when our bodies and minds should be sleeping. I was actually falling asleep whilst walking. The challenge took a total of 17 hours 50 minutes to complete.

"We had a celebratory pint in the pub at Ribblehead before being driven back to our respective homes for a hot bath and some much needed sleep.”

Gary completed the challenge in memory of his dad, George, who was also cared for by Manorlands Hospice, which is run by the Sue Ryder charity.

Gary said: “The care, kindness and respect shown to my dad at Manorlands by the nurses and care staff was exceptional, allowing him the choice and dignity to spend his final months in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his loved ones."

Anyone wishing to still donate can go to Sean and Gary’s fundraising page: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/SeanGill.

Hospice fundraiser Debra Chalmers said: “Sean and Gary undertook a great challenge and have raised an incredible amount, which will help Manorlands Hospice continue to provide care. We are all very grateful for their hard work and commitment.”

Anyone inspired by Sean and Gary can join the official Sue Ryder The Yorkshire Three Peaks fundraiser on July 3 when walkers will complete one circuit of the route, trekking 24 miles in 12 hours.
