BEN Rhydding’s under-14 girls continued on their victorious ways by winning the Yorkshire Youth League play-offs for the first time in 13 years after beating Doncaster on penalty flicks at Wakefield on Sunday.

Rhydding began the day with their first pool match against Doncaster – possibly the league's most improved side. Although Rhydding started the brighter with penetrating runs through midfield from Becky Hadfield and Nisha Cant, the quality of the final ball into the D was lacking and Rhydding struggled to create chances as they were held to a goalless draw.

Thirsk B were their next opponents and were beaten 4-0. Becky Hadfield opened the scoring from a short corner while Freya Bellamy, Sophie Armitage and Jemima Jagger proved a handful for the Thirsk defence.

Gabby Pope added a second goal with a fierce shot low into the net, Cant netted a third from a short corner before Hadfield rounded off the scoring with her second.

Rhydding’s final group match was against Leeds Adel and Alicia Cumberland was key to their 2-1 success as she marked the opposition's key player out of the game.

Hadfield and Kirsty McMillan both hit the post before Hadfield opened the scoring after ten minutes. She then added a second, firing a reverse stick shot past a stunned Adel keeper.

Adel grabbed a late consolation goal on the final whistle from a short corner, but the win meant that Rhydding were into the semi-final against Thirsk A.

Two goals from Hadfield set Rhydding on their way, before Evie Malir split the Thirsk defence with a long ball for Armitage to run onto and slot home to complete a 3-0 win.

Doncaster had squeezed past hosts Wakefield on penalty flicks in the other semi-final.

The match was evenly contested and Doncaster went ahead when Ben Rhydding lost possession in their own D and the ball was fired past Sophie Dale.

Rhydding squandered chance after chance until they were awarded a short corner in the last minute which Hadfield finished decisively.

The match finished all square, and the title was to be decided on penalty flicks. Rhydding converted two of their first four through Malir and McMillan, but Dale produce three solid saves to leave Rachel Scott with the fifth flick to lift the title, which she duly scored.

Rhydding will now compete in EH Cup North Round in Chester on April 19.
