ZOE Judkowski, 16, and 12-year-old Amber Woffindin, who was giving four years away to some of her opponents, have earmarked themselves as players to keep an eye on.

They played first couple for Ilkley Grammar School's senior girls' team in Bradford Grammar School's Invitational Tournament, where the school finished joint runners-up with Ampleforth College behind Queen Margaret's of York.

Completing the Ilkley GS team in the doubles tournament were 16-year-olds Maya Booton, Ella Glover and 15-year-old Melinda McNiff, with opposition coming from as far away as Newcastle (Royal Grammar School).

Ilkley Grammar School's head of PE Hilary Ravensdale said: "We were the only state school competing against independent schools, and our girls certainly impressed everyone!

"Zoe and Amber were the lead pairing of the tournament, defeating all opposing first couples, with a loss of only five games in six sets . . . they are definitely two players to watch out for in the future!"

Likewise, Ilkley Grammar School's boys' team were the only independent school taking part in their Bradford Grammar School tournament, which again covered the North of England.

Ollie Burton, 13, and Charlie Nixon, 15, were not only up against sixth-formers but also first pairs, and did well to come third, while second pair Max Tales, 16, and Matt Connolly, 15, won two matches to come fourth, as did 16-year-old third pair Tom Weir and very late stand-in Joe Tales.
