A NUMBER of new entries helped make Cononley Scarecrow Festival successful for the seventh year running.

Villagers and visitors followed a trail around Cononley over the Bank Holiday weekend in search of 70 scarecrows designed with a film theme in mind.

"There were some incredible scarecrows," said Lois Brown, chairman of Cononley Parish Council. "It's our seventh year and it was nice to see some of the newer villagers get into the spirit of it."

Cllr Brown said that the film theme gave everyone a wide scope and resulted in a record number of entries.

The winning entry was Despicable Me and The Missing Minions, designed by Emma, James and Amelia Raven.

Sam Wade came second with a Lego Movie scarecrow display and in third place was the Raw family with a Nanny McPhee scarecrow.

Special awards were given to the Gregory family, Munslow family and Graham family for their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 50 Shades of Hay and How to Train a Dragon entries, respectively.

Cllr Brown said the weekend was capped off with some fine weather on the Bank Holiday Monday, which saw many people also taking part in two duck races and enjoying refreshments in the Cononley Village Institute.

She also said the Tour de Yorkshire did not affect attendances on the Sunday as people did the scarecrow trail either before or after the race.

The festival raised around £1,800 for Cononley Village Institute.
