POLICE officer Dave Carpenter decided to use pedal power to raise money for Manorlands Hospice after a friend and colleague died of cancer.

Dave - known to many as Harry - undertook an endurance challenge to help the Sue Ryder hospice that had cared for Sgt Ian Spence.

Less than 48 hours after hearing his friend had passed away, Dave set off from his home in Langcliffe to see just how far he could cycle in under 24 hours.

After a journey lasting 23 hours and 59 minutes, Dave cycled a total of 315 miles. This involved 16,351 feet of climbing before he reached his final destination in Oban, Scotland.

Dave said: “The toughest time of the challenge was at 1am when I got lost in Glasgow and had to go back 10 miles. The worst part of the route was the big five-mile hill climb at the end of Loch Lomond.”

He raised a total of £882.50.

Hospice fundraiser Debra Chalmers said “Dave did a fantastic job with his challenge. I am amazed at how far he cycled in under 24 hours. Thanks go to Dave for doing such a great job in raising much needed funds and supporting the hospice."
