FIVE people were injured, three seriously, in a crash on the A682 road near Hellifield on Friday afternoon.
Police say the accident involved a Volvo S40 travelling from Hellifield to Gisburn, and a VW Golf heading in the opposite direction.
They collided outside Stansfield Farm, Nappa, just after 4.30pm.
The occupants of the Golf had to be freed from the wreckage by firefighters using hydraulic cutting equipment.
The driver, a 67-year-old man from Giggleswick, and a 62-year-old passenger, also from Giggleswick, suffered slight injuries, but a second passenger, a 71-year-old woman from Bury, suffered broken ribs, a broken sternum and internal bruising.
The occupants of the other vehicle - both in their 80s and from Bury - also suffered serious injuries.
All five casualties were taken to hospital.
Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to contact PC Alison Travis at North Yorkshire Police on 101 (option 2) or email Alison.Travis@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
